In April 2024, I was awarded second place in the ‘Legacy Photography Awards’ (LPA) for The Best Newborn Photography. Winning this award has also put me in the running to obtain the International Photographer of the Year Award 2024, held by LPA.
The image was taken on the baby-posing table in my newborn photography studio in West Malling, Kent. I chose to use the heart bowl prop, which is one of my favourites. This little girl named Mabel, fit into it perfectly. I decided to use muted pink colours as they create a calming effect. The baby’s mum, Ellie, brought the bow with her and asked me to incorporate it into the image as it was a bow from her great-grandmother's wedding dress. This immediately gave the photograph a deeper story and special meaning, which I knew would create a precious heirloom for their family.
The lighting in the image is soft enough to avoid dense shadows that could be distracting but has enough character to create volume on the baby’s face. The textures and details look natural and retain their structure, showing the care taken in retouching.
The colour palette is limited to beige and white tones, achieving a magnificent tonal harmony, which avoids chromatic distraction. The out-of-focus legs create a beautiful sense of depth that further enhances the visual impact of the areas in focus.
Over the past year, I have been regularly submitting images to win the best newborn photography award, pushing myself to create beautiful photographs for my clients and, with their permission, entering them into competitions. This is a good way for me to obtain feedback from internationally recognised judges and find ways to improve the standard of my work.
This has seen my images win the best newborn photography award for AFNS Award in April 2024 and Silver Winner in the Prime Contest 2023.
I am so excited to see what the rest of 2024 brings. I want to continue to develop my work, but most of all, I want to capture your precious babies and freeze time for you so you can always remember how teeny they once were.
